 Description:

This course is designed to help understand industrial development in the Asia Pacific. It will focus on three broad themes, namely, the nature of Asian capitalism and industrial organization, the role of the state in industrial development, and the diversity of the region in terms of economic development trajectories.

Lectures and presentations will examine the debates and issues surrounding "Asian-style" capitalism and its differences vis a¢ vis America's, the influence of Japan on the region, the role of business networks and overseas Chinese, and the political economic implications of its industrial dynamics. Students will be expected to present relevant readings and be ready to help lead discussions (with some assistance from the lecturer) on the topic. In addition, there will be four forums involving discussions between groups of students. These discussions are expected to be presented in class. The six major countries for comparison are South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

In sum, students in this course will be introduced to the following themes:

The theoretical constructs surrounding modern Asian industrial development

Differences/similarities between Asia and America's industrial geographies, and, potential implications

Japan's role in regional industrial production
