NCGIA Initiative 21:
Formal Models of Common Sense Geographic Worlds
The NCGIA's research initiative on "Formal Models of Common Sense Geographic
Worlds conducted its "Specialist Meeting in
San Marcos, Texas, October 30 to November 3, 1996. Forty-one researchers,
from 7 countries and 12 US states, representing 33 different institutions in
the academic, public, and private
sectors, met on the campus
of Southwest Texas State University for 3 days of intensive and productive
discussions aimed at identifying and prioritizing a research agenda for the
topic. The report on the workshop
has been published as NCGIA Technical Report 97-2.
Whereas some participants were invited, the majority were selected through
a process in which application to participate were submitted in response to a
Call for Papers
and reviewed by members of the
Initiative 21
Steering Committee. The
List of Participants includes links to the materials
submitted by many of the participants in the summer of 1996 as parts of their
applications to participate.
Background Materials on Initiative 21:
- Egenhofer and Mark's COSIT'95 paper, "Naive Geography", which
defined some aspects of the topic of this initiative.
- Proposal
submitted
to the NCGIA Board in November 1995 to establish this Initiative; the proposal
received formal Board approval in January 1996.
