I am studying erosion processes following wildfire. I will
be utilizing hydrological models and remote sensing data from MODIS and Landsat.
I am currently examining the feasibility of integrating AVHRR and GOES data as
well. This is a unique area for the University at Buffalo, but I became
interested in wild fire while working for the Rocky Mountain Fire Science Lab
in Missoula, MT. The internship component of IGERT was by far the most valuable
IGERT experience. My thesis project and the IGERT program have allowed me to
combine my interests in Remote Sensing, Environmental Modeling, and Geographic
Information Systems. The thesis includes the generation of a near real time
burn scar algorithm and its assessment. I will also use imagery, hydrological
models, and GIS to explore the effects of fire on watersheds and reservoirs. My
thesis advisor is Dr. Joe Atkinson, Director of the Great Lakes Institute.
Committee members are from Engineering, Geology, Geography, and Imaging
Science. When I am not busy with modeling and imagery I enjoy canoeing,
camping, fishing, and painting rock portraits of my two wild kittens,
Bartholomew and Meesha. The cats meowed their intention to move to NY loudly
from a window well of the Smoke Jumpers dorm in Missoula.
