Geography Resources on the Internet
The Internet can be a great tool for finding geographic information.
Here are some of the ever-expanding resources available:
US Federal Resources
- The USGS Web Server is a guide
to the Geological Survey. Contains general information about the
USGS, its products, and a growing supply of FTP-able
online data
.
- Information about the
GRASS GIS
software, developed by the Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories
(CERL). Contains general information, documentation, and several demos.
- The EROS Data Center,
the USGS repository for Remote Sensing data. They maintain the
Global Land Information System (GLIS),
containing information about digital data available from USGS and other sources.
It is especially useful for graphically browsing and ordering satellite imagery
(if you are at an X workstation,
here is the semi-graphic version of GLIS)
US Commercial Resources
- The Xerox Map Server is an
experimental WWW tool for browsing the world over the Net. It allows you to
generate simple maps of anywhere on the earth at any scale.
- The Space Remote
Sensing Center at the Institute for Technology Development; this
agency works with NASA and the USDA for developing and promoting applications
of RS and GIS.
- The Institute for Transportation
Research and Education at the U. of North Carolina has a lot of info on
GIS data, research, and education.
- The Perseus Atlas is a
project to build a GIS of the ancient world. The site has a good directory of
GIS information on the Net.
US State Information
- The GIS Planning Council
for the State of Texas is coordinating the publication of GIS data from state agencies.
